After reviewing the testimonials and personally experiencing a multitude of workplaces, we've constructed a few recomendations for both private and public organizations. Keep in mind, each organization is unique and our recommendations are meant to be useful by ways of brainstorming new solutions to new problems.
Our Recommendations
Change Management Structure
A lesson we learned from our friends over at Moz is that management positions shouldn't always be the next ring on the ladder. For example, just because you are exellent at app development, doesn't necessarily mean you should be promoted to supervise the app developers. Supervisor or managerial positions requires leadership qualities and skillsets. That being said, managerial roles should be looked at as a seperate entity. This may require a change in culture and a change in salary structure.
Workforce Projection
The workforce is expanding to ecompass five generations of working indivudials. This is the first time that there will be such a wide generational span in the workforce. Generation Z (the genearaion following Millennials) is going to be making their entry into the workforce soon. This generation is going to be even more demanding of their work environments than millennials and organizations will soon be required to revalute their recruitment tactics once more.
Flexible Work Environments
Millennials want flexibility. Period. Also, by giving them multiple ways and environments to work gives them autonomy. Let them choose between a couch, a desk, or a private room.
Flexible Work Schedule
Paralell to flexible work environment, give employees a little flexibility in their schedule. Contrary to popular belief Millennials don't want total flexibility, they just want a little. Give them a set scheudle with options for flex time such as a four day work week with ten hour shifts. Or allow a 'drop in site' so that workers do not have to come in every day and can stop in when they need to. Not only will this fight fatigue or mundaneness in the workplace, but it will save money for the organization by using less energey and less space.
Evolve and Implement New Technology
Updated technology is what will bring in Millennials. From our personal experiences we can say that being in a workplace that has slow computers and no open wi-fi is like being at our grandmothers house. Millennials know how to use the newest tools and aren't afraid to teach others how to use them aswell. Keeping the workplace technology up to date will show Millennials that the organization works efficiently and is dedicated to improving how effectively things get done. If new technology is not an option, be open to utilizing new tools such as piktochart, goto meeting, wix, infogram, tableau, etc. These are the newest technological tools that are up-and-coming and Millennials continue to find and use the most effective ones.
Culture Coaching
Culture can destroy an organization and can also detract new talent from wanting to apply. This is why it is so important that we understand generations and what shaped their values. By understanding what each generation desires in the workplace we can create a culture where everyone thrives.
